What's the average lifespan of a car starter?

The starter on my '96 Ford Taurus died in September of 2006. How long should I expect my brand new starter to last? I drive daily, but not far from home and average maybe 5-10 car ignition starts per day. Last year was the first time I ever had a starter go on a car, so I'm just trying to find out how long they last usually.
